Five Gifts for Food-Lovers, France-Lovers, and Cooks —In Stock Now

Greetings! This year, to make your lives easier, I’ve whittled down my list of top favorite gifts for lovers of France. Better yet, these five gifts are all in stock, and can ship to arrive before Christmas (as of today, Monday, December 18). I hope you find this list useful—it’s full of things that any cook would love to own.

1. The Braiser, of Course

If the best cook in your life doesn’t own a braiser, be a hero and get them one! My favorite braiser is the Le Creuset Braiser; however, it’s pricey. A really good inexpensive version is the Lodge Braiser. I can’t say enough about these wonderful pans (and if you don’t know why you need one, here’s what they’re all about.

2. Stainless Steel Cheese Knife Set

3. Cuisinart 10-Inch Crepe Pan

And crepe pans aren’t just for crepes: I’ve used mine for an omelet pan, as well as for grilled cheese sandwiches.

I won’t call these “steak knives,” because you’ll use them for everything from chicken to pot roast to pizza. It’s the French way.

Everything from chicken breasts to pot roasts to pizza cuts better with a serrated knife, and that’s why the French use serrated knives at the table for just about everything except fish. So while these might be classified as “steak knives,” once you start using them for everything else, you’ll wonder why you’ve been using flat-edged table-knives for so long.

Seriously–I can’t imagine serving most of the things I cook without these knives.

 

5. Fleur de Sel: A Great French Stocking-Stuffer


If you need just one more nice gift to round out your a gift for the cook in your life, give them a box of Fleur de Sel. I once interviewed chefs about why they love Fleur de Sel; “You can taste the sea in it!” said one. “It tastes more ocean-y,” said another. Indeed, Fleur de Sel, a natural, flaked sea salt, really does something remarkable to foods. It’s a great finishing touch, but I also simply love sprinkling it on meats before roasting–I love the way it won’t entirely melt into a roast chicken, for example, giving a little bit of texture and pop of flavor to the bird.
